Background & History

AIDServe Indiana, is the new statewide agency created as the result of a merger effective January 1, 1998 between ICAAN (Indiana Community AIDS Action Network) and Indiana Cares (organized in 1984 as the first HIV/AIDS con-nnunity-based organization in Indiana and the second in the United States). As the only statewide HIV/AIDS organization, AIDServe Indiana addresses the needs of Indiana's HIV-challenged community through a variety of programs. Not only does AIDServe Indiana educate people about making behavioral changes in order to prevent and lessen the risk of the transmission of HIV, but financially assists thousands of Hoosiers with their housing, utility, medication, insurance, food, clothing and transportation needs. In addition, AIDServe Indiana serves as an advocate on issues involving HIV/AIDS in Indiana. The merger will allow for a more efficient and effective means of delivering services to those individuals and families impacted by HIV/AIDS in Indiana.

A diverse and talented staff of 30 individuals along with hundreds of volunteers work on behalf of those individuals and families impacted by IHV/AIDS in Indiana. Program support comes through the generosity of individuals, corporations and foundations, as well as from both state and federal government. Among the special events sponsored by AIDServe Indiana is the AIDS Walk and Festival, the largest single fundraiser for IRV/AIDS in Indiana.

Besides the following education and client based services listed below, Indiana Cares, Inc. is host to the Indiana Chapter of the Names Project AIDS Memorial Quilt. The chapter provides information to individuals and organizations interested in adding names/panels to the Quilt as well as opportunities to display portions of the Quilt in Indiana.
