The Word is the Southern Midwest's oldest and largest gay and lesbian newspaper, about the celebrate it's 10th anniversary. Based in Indianapolis, The Word serves every major city in Indiana, as well as Illinois, along with Western and Central Ohio and Kentucky. Certified circulation as of November 1999 was in excess of 15,000 the last Tuesday of each month.

The Word is the area's only full-service free newspaper. Content includes breaking news in the state and region, as well as features, reviews of film, restaurants, theatre and music, and the notorious Miss Lila's Gossip Column. In addition, The Word is distributed by clubs, news stands, street boxes and mail thruout the area each month and welcomes news stories, tips and other contributions (see the web site or e-mail if you have questions.)

In addition to Indiana and surrounding states, The Word carries news of the nation and world and has a Washington correspondent on staff, as well as bureaus in Illinois and Ohio. We are the only gay Indiana-based gay publication to ever win a first-place award from the Society of Professional Journalists for our content.
