Dates: Sat. Nov. 8th at 5pm
Sun. Nov. 9th at 6pm

Joan Crowe, MAC Award-Winner for Female Musical Comedy, comes home for her annual benefit for The Wellness Center. Daughter of Josefa Crowe, Joan Crowe grew up in Indianapolis, and spent summers either on her grandparents' dairy farm in Germany, or traipsing about Europe with her 3 siblings. The community theater and high school musicals she performed in gave her an early love of singing. She attended the University of Evansville before transferring to Indiana University to complete her BFA in Theatre. She attended the prestigious Asolo State Theatre for graduate school where she concentrated on classical theater.

"So I arrived in New York with 2 useless degrees and a head full of classical training. I quickly discovered there was not a lot of work for Shakespearean actresses, and that it was doubtful that any the of new roles would be written in prose."

Tickets: $25 (cash & check) available from the Wellness Center at 257-1505 or from Out Word Bound Bookstore, 625 N. East Street

Location: Phoenix Theatre
749 North Park Ave
(Park Ave & St. Clair St)

A Thursday alternative: The Kim Archer Band at Jaguar's

It hurts to hear so many of us are feeling like there's "nothing to do" on Thursdays. Ok, here is something.

This month the 13th, 20th and 27th are Thirsty Thursdays at The Jaguar. Yes, it's different, yes it's a little unfamiliar but it IS a place to go…and they DO want women to be there!

Join us next Thursday (13th) and check it out. The band will be playing originals and Heavy Soul & Groove from 9:30-12:30, and we'll be inviting surprise guests and performers to keep it fresh. This is NOT an open stage…but it IS an open party.

Bucket of Beer specials and a new entrance off of Pennsylvania might just be enough to peak your curiosity. Bring your friends of all types, come by yourself...whatever. Hope to see you there!

PHOENIX THEATRE RETURNS TO BAWDY VAUDEVILLE AND THE SPECTACULAR CAREER OF SOPHIE TUCKER

Su Ours stars in SOPHIE TUCKER: AMERICAN LEGEND, a Musical-Comedy Revue of the Life and Career of a True American Original

Sophie Tucker was a unique presence in American musical entertainment for nearly 60 years (she lived from 1884 - 1966). She had an imposing physicality and a voice of great power developed for the theater way before the days of amplification. The Phoenix Theatre is proud to present a musical comedy tribute to this amazing woman with their production of SOPHIE TUCKER: AMERICAN LEGEND by Jack Fournier and Kathy Halenda. Starring local cabaret favorite Su Ours, with busy Indy musician Paul Galloway on piano, the show will open with a half-price preview on Thursday, November 20 and continue through Sunday, December 21. Tickets are on sale now. Tickets for those 25 and over are $22.50; tickets for those 24 and under are $12.00. The Phoenix Theatre is located at 749 North Park Avenue, at the corner of St. Clair Street, just north of Massachusetts Avenue. Tickets can be purchased with a credit card by calling the box office at 635-PLAY (635-7529).

Sophie Tucker was an incomparable Vaudeville headliner; they called her "International Favorite," "Miss Show Business," and "La Tucker." Her contemporaries included W. C. Fields, Edgar Bergen, Fanny Brice, Ziegfeld, and Gypsy Rose Lee. She performed all over the world: New York, Chicago, Paris, London, Los Angeles, and Las Vegas. She performed the Palace, the Palladium, the Orpheum and Pantages Vaudeville circuits. She headlined at the most popular clubs: Tony Pastor's, the Trocadero, the Cocoanut Grove, the Latin Quarter, and the Venetian Room. AIDS Action Presents: "A Day of Learning, an Evening of Entertainment"

A Benefit Concert for Indiana AIDS Fund and the IU Kenya Project Saturday November 29th, 2003. Evening Concert admission: $15.00

We come together because of our profound concern about the AIDS crisis, both here at home and worldwide, and with an overriding sense that we must take action.

AIDS Action is an ad hoc committee formed with the sponsorship of the Gay/Straight Alliance of Columbus, The Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Columbus, PFLAG Chapter of Seymour, Columbus Peace Fellowship, and the participation of concerned individuals from the community at large. We are now working towards a specific AIDS Action event, which will raise local awareness by providing information and raising funds for the AIDS pandemic in Indiana and globally.

AIDS Action: A Benefit Concert
A Day of Learning, an Evening of Entertainment
Saturday, November 29th, 2003 at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation, 7850 West Goeller Boulevard, Columbus IN 47201.

There will be several components to this day-long event. During the day there will be speakers on HIV/AIDS issues, exhibits by youth groups (displays of artwork, posters, essays, diaries, poetry, etc. and human rights materials from the local student chapter of Amnesty International), informational booths (Positive-Link, Bloomington; the Red Cross; Hospice; IU 's Kenya Program, etc.), Planned Parenthood, The Kinsey Institute, documentary film, music, a silent auction, and more.

The evening concert will be preceded by a wine and cheese reception.

This year the funds raised will be divided equally between The Indiana AIDS Fund, for patient assistance and prevention, and the IU Kenya Program. This project, The IU-Moi University Partnership, led by Dr. Robert Einterz, is vital in assisting with continental Africa's HIV/AIDS situation. (Dr. Einterz will be one of our featured speakers).

In connection with these events, AIDS Action is coordinating several ongoing projects:

  • Columbus Regional Hospital will present Dr. Doug Webb speaking on AIDS issues as part of their Continuing Medical Education program. (12PM on November 20th - Kroot Auditorium at Columbus Regional Hospital)

  • The Human Rights Commission of Columbus will base their annual Student Essay Contest on issues related to HIV/AIDS.

  • There will be an ongoing link between local children and residents of the Bwafano Orphanage in Zambia, a home for children who have lost their families to HIV/AIDS.
