Fairness Alliance Announces "Make Your Vote Count" Drive
Indianapolis--In an effort to impact the City County Council elections, the Greater Indianapolis Fairness Alliance is asking GLBT people and their allies to register to vote and to sign up for a voter's guide.
The "Make Your Vote Count" drive can have a significant impact this year if projections of low voter turnout hold true. Voter registration packets are available at many local businesses. Also, a staffed registration table will be present at area LGBT events, churches, and meetings.
Later this year, a voter's guide will be developed to identify potentially supportive candidates. The voter's guide will be based on a questionnaire that will be given to all City-County candidates in viable races in Marion County.
In 2002, a committee of the City-County Council defeated a proposed ordinance that would have extended benefits to the domestic partners of City-County employees. The defeat of the ordinance resonated with many Hoosiers, resulting in a call for political advocacy and education.
The Greater Indianapolis Fairness Alliance (GIFA) is an GLBT politically focused organization. GIFA will serve as an organizational body coordinating and mobilizing the Indianapolis community around GLBT political initiatives.
