Proposal to Roll Back GLBT Rights Withdrawn

01/25/2006 AMENDMENT WOULD HAVE NULLIFIED INDY HUMAN RIGHTS ORDINANCE

At the request of Indiana House of Representatives Speaker Brian Bosma, a controversial amendment introduced by Rep. Jeff Thompson, R-Lizton was withdrawn from Indiana House Bill 1010, which restricts governments' ability to seize private property through eminent domain.

The amendment would have prohibited cities and counties from providing equal rights protections based on sexual orientation or gender identity, effectively nullifying the recently passed Indianapolis Human Rights Ordinance and other local ordinances around the state.

Bosma referred to the amendment, which prompted an abrupt shut down of the House amid an emotional eruption, as "a severe distraction" from more pressing issues on the House agenda.
