Steps You Can Take to Fight The Amendment
- Give a damn! You might be one who is saying "why should I care, who needs marriage anyway?" This amendment is about much more than the headline-grabbing "Gay Marriage." It affects your relationships and your children, your friends and your friends' relationships and children, and it is a direct assault on your civil rights. The extreme religious right, who are the driving force behind the Marriage Discrimination Amendment, have a much larger anti-GLBT agenda than simply preventing you from getting married.
- Give 'til it hurts. Our opponents are raising phenomenal amounts of money to win this fight. Eric Miller, leader of the extreme right-wing group Advance America, has vowed to raise $8 million dollars to wage this war, and he will reach his goal. You can easily donate online to Indiana Equality, who is leading the fight against this mean-spirited amendment.
- Get involved. Check out GayIndy's Political Organizations Listings and volunteer your time, even if it's only to show up for a protest. Join the GayIndy elist, and when you're asked to take a couple of minutes to write or phone a political figure do it!
- Be political in 2008. Understand the issue, and who our friends and enemies are. Regardless of how you vote in the national elections, you must be a single issue voter when voting for your Indiana State Representative. Help candidates who help us, and encourage your friends and family to vote with you. The 2006 election is an "off year" election, and you can make a difference in these races!
-
Talk! Talk to your friends, coworkers, and family about this issue. Help them understand that it is not a religious issue, but an issue that affects families like yours in matters of raising children, and in sickness and death, and basic human dignity. Talk to them about hospital visitations and inheritance rights and other real issues; appeal to their fair-minded Hoosier sensibilities. This is a civil issue, not a religious one!
