Amendment Moves Ahead In Indiana Senate

02/08/2007SECOND READING PASSES WITH NO AMENDMENTS

The full Indiana Senate considered Senate Joint Resoution 7 (SJR7) on second reading today. Second reading is where amendments to a particular piece of legislation are considered by the full chamber.

Senator John Broden (D-South Bend) offered an amendment to SJR7 that would have struck the second line of the resolution - "This Constitution or any other Indiana law may not be construed to require that marital status or the legal incidents of marriage be conferred upon unmarried couples of groups".

But his proposal was defeated by voice vote. It appears that all 17 Senate Democrat Senators favored the change, however. Senators Broden, Tim (D-Anderson) and Anita Bowser (D-Michigan City) spoke eloquently regarding the need to oppose SJR7 and to support the proposed change. Senator Bowser took on Senator Brant Hershman (author of SJR7) calling the whole idea of the "Marriage Discrimination Amendment" "horrid".

SJR7 is now eligible for a third reading vote, the final consideration by the Senate. That is likely to happen on either Monday, February 12th or Tuesday, February 13th. If the measure passes there it will go on to the Indiana House of Representatives.
