Indianapolis-- A unique theatrical production, "Voices from the Heart," made it's debut on Sunday December 1 at the Civic Theatre in Indianapolis. The result of hundreds of interviews with Indiana residents living with HIV/AIDS, the production is a powerful emotional statement which it's creators intend to use to raise awareness throughout the state.
Directed by Diane Kondrat and Paticia McKee, the premier production of "Voices from the Heart" featured professional actors reading the words of the interviewees, often verbatim according to Kondrat, who also performed a segment of the show with cast member Bill Simmons the day before at the World AIDS day observance at the Broad Ripple Art Center.
The show was produced by Full Circle Enterprises, a small communications organization led by Wayne P. Zink, and by InterAction Theatre, Inc., a small group of actors who travel around Indiana performing for audiences in settings as varied as shelters for abused women and the homeless, detention centers, schools and hospitals.
A visibly moved Wayne Zink explained after the show that the production "is based on the premise that we have an intellectual understanding, but so many of us don't make the emotional connection" when it comes to HIV/AIDS. He explained that the show is designed to be presented in various forms by professionals and non-professionals alike, and the focus of the group's efforts will now be to make "Voices from the Heart" available throughout the state.
Their plan is to bring the production to different cities throughout Indiana, affording communities a chance to interact as presenters. The script will also be made available to be used for class discussion and informal presentations.
