Indy Pride Gives Back to Community

Donations Made to IYG & Gregory Powers DEFA Fund

At the July Indy Pride Board of Directors meeting, the Board of Indy Pride approved two large donations to local organizations. The first donation was a $5,000 grant to Indiana Youth Group (IYG). This grant will be used to provide educational programming for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and questioning youth throughout the State of Indiana.

In addition, the Indy Pride Board approved a donation of $5,250 to the Gregory Powers Direct Emergency Financial Assistance (DEFA) Fund. Money from the Gregory Powers DEFA Fund provides financial assistance to those individuals affected by HIV/AIDS.

"With the extraordinary community support of this year's Pride, Indy Pride more than doubled the profits from the previous year and Indy Pride Board members wanted to give money back to the GLBT community,"stated Gary Brackett, President of Indy Pride, Inc. "We believe that the money donated to the DEFA Fund and to IYG will be used to help those who need financial assistance the most."

Additional profits from Pride events will be distributed through scholarships to gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender students throughout the State of Indiana. At the October Board Meeting, the Indy Pride Board of Directors will be reviewing Scholarship Applications to determine scholarships to be awarded this year. Scholarship recipients will be announced at the Indy Pride Community Thanksgiving Event which will be held on Saturday, November 20, 2004.

The IN Pride 2004 Parade & Festival events were held the weekend of June 12-13, 2004. IN Pride 2004 had a record number of vendor booths this year. In addition to the vendor income and beverage sales, Pride Board members were able to obtain $73,000 in sponsorship money from both national and local sponsors including in-kind donations contributing to the record profit of $27,993.64.

Planning meetings for IN Pride 2005 will begin in October. Check the Indy Pride website at www.indyprideinc.com for details or contact Gary Brackett at [email protected] if you would like to participate.
