AIDS Walk & Ride raises $130,000 for the Indiana AIDS Fund

The 14th annual AIDS Walk & Ride raised $130,000 for the Indiana AIDS Fund. The event, which featured 1,200 participants, was held on Oct. 10 at Crown Hill Cemetery, the home of the Indiana AIDS Memorial.

Team Greg's & Metro raised nearly one third of the total by collecting $42,718, an event record. The second-highest fundraising team was the Indianapolis Men's Chorus, which raised more than $5,000. The AIDS Walk & Ride also benefited from the support of Target, the event sponsor.

"Teams like Greg's and Metro is just an example of how compassionate Indiana communities are about helping us fight the effects of this tragic disease," said Steve Everett, executive director of the Indiana AIDS Fund. "We're grateful that so many people came out to show their support. All the teams and contributors helped make this a successful event."

The money raised by the event will go toward the Indiana AIDS Fund's Gregory R. Powers Direct Emergency Financial Assistance (DEFA) Fund, which provides emergency shelter, food, medicine and other daily necessities to those who have been diagnosed with HIV/AIDS. More than 10,000 Hoosiers have been diagnosed with HIV and AIDS since 1982.

The 2005 AIDS Walk & Run will take place Oct. 10 at Crown Hill Cemetery. Registration information will be available at www.indianaaidsfund.org in mid 2005.

The Indiana AIDS Fund, founded in 1994, is co-convened by The Health Foundation of Greater Indianapolis and the Indiana State Department of Health. Since its inception, it has become the largest private funder of HIV/AIDS programs in the state, granting more than $2.4 million to more than 65 organizations. The Indiana AIDS Fund also is a community partner of the National AIDS Fund.
