The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged)

Theatre on the Square
627 Massachusetts Ave
Indianapolis, Indiana 46204

Fridays and Saturdays @ 8pm, Sundays @ 2:30 p.m.

Three performers in need of serious psychiatric help attempt to condense all of William Shakespeare's 37 plays into 90 minutes! (Roughly the amount of time it took Kenneth Branaugh's movie version of "Hamlet" to really get going). Obviously this is a comedy which promises to deliver the sort of education about the works of this esteemed playwright that we wish we all had.

STEEL MAGNOLIAS

Indianapolis Civic Theatre on Fridays & Saturdays at 8pm, Sundays at 2pm
$23 main floor, $18 balcony
Tickets 317-923-4597

About the play:

Skillfully crafted, full of sharp and funny dialogue, playwright Robert Harling evokes an affectionate picture of eccentricity in the small-town South. Concerned with a group of gossipy women in a beauty parlor, this popular Broadway comedy is alternately hilarious and touching - and, in the end, deeply revealing of the strength and purposefulness which underlies the antic banter of its characters. The story chronicles the lives of six women over a two-year period, capturing the joy and sorrow, poignancy and crisis of everyday life. The action is set in Truvy's beauty salon in Chinquapin, Louisiana where all the ladies who are 'anybody' come to have their hair done. Helped by her dithering young assistant, the out-spoken, wise-cracking Truvy ("There's no such thing as natural beauty") dispenses shampoos and free advice to her customers. A poignant play filled with Southern humor!

Location & parking info:

Indianapolis Civic Theatre is located at 1200 W. 38th Street, on the beautiful grounds of the Indianapolis Museum of Art. Free parking is still available on the grounds of the Indianapolis Museum of Art. Due to the construction process at the Museum, the parking garage is closed at this time. However, more well lit parking has been added on the Museum grounds. A circular drive on the south side of the complex will allow for passenger drop-off and pick-up, while shuttles will transport visitors from the parking lots to the main entrance of the Museum and the Theatre. A clearly marked entrance corridor will guide you to the Civic Theatre lobby.

Admission is Free ('cuz it's a Monday), but CD's will be available and you know you'll want a beverage or two from Vic!

About the Musicians

evalyn parry
evalyn weaves together the personal, the political, the poetic and the hilarious in her compelling combination of music and spoken-word. Melding "honesty and conviction and street-smart coolness"(CBC Radio), her work captures the human experience with "relevance, intensity and wit"(Ottawa Folk Festival). Whether she's on stage costumed as a singing maxi-pad, ranting and rhyming her savvy poetic commentary, or delivering a stark, unaccompanied song, evalyn's live performances are as intimate as they are bold, funny and thought-provoking. Parry's distinctive spoken word pieces have been commissioned and broadcast on several national CBC radio programs, while her unabashedly queer perspective is winning her an enthusiastic, loyal following where ever she performs. Since the release of her debut album, 'things that should be warnings' (Ponygirl Records, 2001), evalyn was chosen as the 2001 recipient of the Beth Ferguson Award for Upcoming Songwriter (Ottawa Folk Festival) and her album was chosen as a CBC Radio "Disc of the Week". 'things that should be warnings' is a refreshing, eclectic mix of evalyn's signature material, from upbeat satire to haunting acoustic ballads to savvy poetic commentary, all delivered in her assured, arresting voice. www.evalynparry.com Local Comment: "Oh yes. I've seen her. She's very good." -Mary Byrne, former Executive Producer of the NWMF.

Eve Goldberg
An engaging performer with a warm, relaxed stage presence, Eve's clear, expressive voice will pull you in, whether she's singing a capella or accompanying herself on fingerstyle or flatpicked guitar. Her music is an appealing blend of the many styles that have deeply influenced her, including folk, blues, bluegrass, swing, jazz, old-time, gospel and more. Singing a mixture of her own songs, songs by other writers, and traditional material, she combines a heartfelt respect for the music of earlier times with a love of contemporary folk styles. Perhaps this is why Eve's own songs have been described as indistinguishable from enduring classics. Audiences love the rich musical texture of her performances, as she sings a quiet ballad one minute, picks a guitar instrumental the next, belts out a blues the next, and tops it off with an uplifting a capella chorus. But more than anything, listeners respond to Eve's music because it is about the everyday lives of ordinary people - their joys, hopes, struggles and triumphs.

If you enjoy [Cathy] Fink's music, or that of Mary Chapin Carpenter. . . give Goldberg a listen

Trevor Mills Trevor Mills is a captivating songwriter and performer who, in various forms, has been a regular on the Canadian folk music scene for years. His intelligent style of songwriting emerges from a background of self-taught folk, country and jazz. His songs tell stories and make a point, sometimes through beautiful, expressive melodies and images, and sometimes through just plain wackiness. His varied repertoire, which includes instrumentals and rousing sing-alongs, make Trevor's live performances very rich and entertaining. Trevor's second CD, "Karaoke Cowboy", is due out at the end of January 2003. www.trevormills.com
