THE PHOENIX THEATRE CONTINUES ITS TRADITION OF ALTERNATIVE HOLIDAY ENTERTAINMENT WITH MIDWEST PREMIERE OF CIRCUMFERENCE OF A SQUIRREL: A RIFF WITH AN INNER-TUBE BY JOHN WALCH
One-Man Comedy is a Funny Look at Family Ties, Holiday Traditions and Terrors
While the musical comedy revue SOPHIE TUCKER: AMERICAN LEGEND graces its Mainstage Theatre, the Phoenix Theatre will present a new comedy by John Walch on its Underground Stage. CIRCUMFERENCE OF A SQUIRREL: A RIFF WITH AN INNER-TUBE is a comedy about a recently divorced young man who, during the holidays, reflects on his life as he watches a squirrel struggle to carry a bagel up a tree. The show will open on Friday, November 28 and continue through Sunday, December 21. Tickets are on sale now. Tickets for those 25 and over are $22.50; tickets for those 24 and under are $12.00. The Phoenix Theatre is located at 749 North Park Avenue, at the corner of St. Clair Street, just north of Massachusetts Avenue. Tickets can be purchased with a credit card by calling the box office at 635-PLAY (635-7529).
During the 90 minutes of CIRCUMFERENCE OF A SQUIRREL, the audience will get to know the hapless Chester, a recently divorced young man who has hit a bad patch in his life. After being fired from his University post, he finds himself sitting by a tree on campus watching a squirrel struggle with a cast off bagel. Squirrels have loomed large in Chester's life since he was a young boy and, in a thoughtful, poignant, and hilarious monologue, he reveals to the audience why. During his ruminations, he describes growing up with an anti-Semitic father and a mother who cannot stop making Christmas wreaths. As he pieces together the reasons why he's currently being dumped on by all creation, the audience is treated to a bittersweet mixture of laughter and pain so common during the holidays.
Note: CIRCUMFERENCE OF A SQUIRREL will share the Phoenix schedule with SOPHIE TUCKER: AMERICAN LEGEND by Fournier and Hallenda. Please note the performance times.

Community of Love Observes World AIDS Day
The Community of Love will host their 3rd annual World AIDS Day Reception and Outstanding Dedication Award Presentation from 5-8 p.m., Monday, December 1, 2003.
Since 1988, Dec.1st has been designated as World Aids Day. This year's theme is "Live and Let Live". Stigma and discrimination are major obstacles to effective HIV/AIDS prevention, HIV stigma and fear of discrimination prevents people living with HIV from acknowledging their HIV status publicly. People with, or suspected of having, HIV may be turned away from health care services, denied housing and employment, shunned by their friends and colleagues, turned down for insurance coverage or refused entry into foreign countries.
Community of Love was formed after the closing of Indianapolis' only HIV/AIDS nursing home, and in response to the continuing needs of the HIV/AIDS population. Community of Love's vision is to "Value all Families", and is carried out through support services including testing, educational programs, speakers, social/spiritual support gatherings, and an annual youth conference, for ages 14-21 entitled Teach One About HIV/AIDS- Pass The Knowledge On. .The World AIDS Day reception is a culmination of all their services and those of collaborative partners to continue the commitment to those living with HIV/AIDS.
The 2003 event will include a dinner reception, raffle, silent auction, and fashion show dedicated to HIV/AIDS survivors by La' Bush Designs. During the evening, Community of Love will present several Outstanding Dedication Awards. Coby Palmer will receive the Outstanding Dedication Award in the Individual category; Channels of Hope will receive the award for a community-based organization; and Eastern Star Outreach Ministry will receive the Community Partner Award. All proceeds from the raffle and silent auction will be used to further Community Of Love's mission and for the opening of a transitional housing facility for people living with HIV/AIDS.
Sponsors of the event include the Indiana State Department of Health, Abbott Pharmaceuticals, and Bristol Myers Squibb. Fox 59's Derrick Wilkerson will emcee the event for the 2nd consecutive year.
The event is free and open to the public. The dinner reception will be held at the Westin, Downtown Indianapolis, located at 50 South Capitol Avenue. For more information, contact Rev. Marie Siroky at (317) 722-0035

MA VIE EN ROSE (1997) (PG)
6:30 pm to 9:00 pm Cottage at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Indianapolis
FREE ADMISSION!
Please join us for our first film in a bi-monthly series exploring issues of sexual orientation, gender identity and expression!
Our first film is MA VIE EN ROSE (My Life in Pink), the international award-winning story of a little girl born in a little boy's body. Convinced that he's the product of misplaced chromosomes, Ludovic truly believes that a miracle is going to happen. He will become a girl, no doubt about it. He's in love with Jerome, his school mate, and son of his father's colleague. When his secret is discovered, the otherwise friendly suburban neighborhood is horrified by the gender confusion, with the cruelest blows coming not from teasing classmates but intolerant adults. Ludo tries hard to be butch, but he can't deny his nature. As his family stumbles and struggles to come to terms with Ludo, they find something special within him, an innocent conviction so powerful and pure that it's infectious.
There will be light refreshments and an opportunity for discussion afterward.
REEL GENDER is co-sponsored by INTRAA, the Indiana Transgender Rights Advocacy Alliance and Interweave the LGBT group at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Indianapolis.

3rd annual Indianapolis Underground Film Festival
The 3rd annual Indianapolis Underground Film Festival is quickly approaching. The 2003 event, December 5th and 6th, features more mainstream work than in years past.
Our new mission is to "showcase under-the-radar film from today's up-and-coming directors who have not yet reached the masses via the multiplex."
We are screening fewer films, but the ones we are showing have all done very well on the festival circuit this past year, winning awards at Sundance, Slamdance, Telluride, SXSW and RESfest to name a few. Three of the directors were included on Filmmaker Magazine summer list of the TOP 25 NEW FACES OF INDIE FILM. We've got a student Academy Award-winning short film as well as the premiere of AN EVERYDAY OCCURRENCE, directed by Dylan Griffith of Indianapolis. His film THE LETTER screened at the 2002 event.
The festival will kick of on Friday, December 5th at Key Cinemas (4044 S. Keystone Ave) at 8PM with the Indiana premiere of ROBOT STORIES, directed by Greg Pak. The feature includes four stories in which human characters struggle to connect in a world or mechanical office workers and robot babies, exploring love, death, family...and robots. The film will be preceded by 2 short films, AN EVERYDAY OCCURRENCE and A NINJA PAYS HALF MY RENT. Immediately following the screening is the opening night party at Circle Bar Saloon(148 E. Market St.) The entire 2nd floor of the club will be desginated by IUFF festival pass holders only (more on tickets and passes further down).
On Saturday, December 6th at 5PM we will be screening THE BOY SCOUT and hosting a Q&A with director Ward Roberts and producer Jessica Slegle (both of whom will be in town for the event). Roberts, an Indiana native, is currently living and working in Los Angeles.
Then at 7PM is the Indiana premiere of MARY/MARY, directed by Joseph Biancaniello. The feature tells the story of Manny, a paranoid hypochondriac with a serious Madonna/Whore complex and a pair of Dick Tracy-style gangsters living in his head. While wrestling with contemporary society's diverse views on the importance and sacredness of sex, MARY/MARY presents an innovative and thought provoking take on mental illness that is not to be missed. The film will be preceded by 2 short films, BAD THOUGHTS and TOM HITS HIS HEAD. Immediately following the screening is the closing night party, sponsored by Benchmark Records, at Radio Radio in Indianapolis. Los Angeles-based THE KILLINGTONS will perform before Indy's own LORETTA takes the stage.
This year we have also teamed up with ORANJE, the progressive art and music fusion, to present ORANJE @ THE UNDERGROUND. They will be transforming the theater lobby into an art gallery with installations, glass-blowing, etc.

******* About Caroline and her second album: Wellspring *******
Caroline Herring's voice swings low through moonlit Mississippi Delta land, sweeps clear and steady from bluegrass to folk, from country on home to Austin like a car winding under stars on meandering, cotton- lined backcountry roads. It is rare to find a CD as completely satisfying on first, and subsequent, listens as "wellspring" by Caroline Herring. Her smooth, keening alto voice washes over the listener like Tupelo honey, and the spare, tasteful arrangements by Rich Brotherton frame her songs so perfectly that the intelligence of her lyrics is almost subtle. In other words, there is nothing not to like about this album. Herring was named Best New Artist by the Austin American-Statesman in January, 2002, then took home Best New Artist honors at the Austin Music Awards that March during the SXSW.

Women in the Arts New Year's Eve--Event Cancelled
WIA regrets to inform you that we have had to cancel the New Year's Eve Dance. Unfortunately the Knights of Columbus Hall backed out of our deal. We have been working the past few days to find another venue to hold the dance, but we have been unable to find another place at this late date. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused.
Please look forward with us to The Goddess Rocks Dance to be held in the spring of 2004 and of course the 30th Anniversary of the National Women's Music Festival.
On another very important note, there will be some great music Monday evening at Cath Coffeehouse at 54th and College at 7pm.
