"The House of Yes" by Wendy MacLeod

This dark comedy looks at the life of a very unusual family. The story begins when eldest son Marty brings his fiancée, Lesly home to meet his family. But this isn't the simple task it should be. Marty's family includes his unbalanced twin sister, Jackie-O, with whom he has a very strange relationship; his younger brother, Anthony, who is treated like a hired hand, and a mother who encourages Marty and Jackie-O's relationship and whose philosophy of life includes the belief that "You raise cattle -- children just happen."

Playwright Elaine Romero's ¡CURANDERAS! at the Phoneix

The Phoenix Theatre will present playwright Elaine Romero's ¡CURANDERAS! a provocative play telling the story of a Chicana doctor who travels to Mexico, where she meets a wisecracking folk healer and encounters an ancient Aztec scroll. The play spans from the ancient past to the present, moving through the physical and spiritual world with dreams, visions and nightmares. Ultimately, through her journey, the young doctor discovers her own gifts of healing. ¡CURANDERAS! is being presented as part of the Chicano Now! exhibits at the Indiana State Museum. The production opens with a half-price preview on Thursday, February 19 and closes Sunday, March 14. Performances are at 6:30pm on Thursdays, 8:00pm on Fridays and Saturdays, and 2:00pm on Sundays. Call the theatre at 317-635-PLAY (317-635-7529) for tickets and information.

¡CURANDERAS! tells the story of two women trying to avoid facing certain truths in their lives. Victoria is a pocha, a Mexican-American who does not speak Spanish. She's just graduated from medical school and she is on holiday in Mexico, away from her political activist fiancé. While on a train she meets Paloma, a Latina curandera, a folk healer. Paloma is taking a break from her husband, whose fidelity she is beginning to question. After running into each other several times, the women become less-than-eager travel partners; Victoria disapproves of Paloma's wisecracking hocus pocus approach to medicine and Paloma senses that Victoria is hiding important secrets. During a visit to a museum, the women come under the power of an ancient Aztec scroll. They both enter into a dreamlike world where Victoria confronts the truth about her fiancé and discovers the hidden healing powers within her, while Paloma sees her marriage in a new light. The women's fateful journey changes them forever.

The Vast Difference by Jeff Daniels at TOTS

Playwright and Screen Actor Jeff Daniels (Apartment 3A, Purple Rose of Cairo, Dumb and Dumber, The Hours) penned this outrageous and funny saga of a man who has sired three daughters (he kept trying for a son) and has decided to call it quits. He wrestles with his decision and ultimately goes through with having a vasectomy with unbelievably funny results which include being pursued by his Doctor toting a chain saw!

Actor Jeff Daniels' third play for his hometown-based theater company: The Purple Rose is a comedy about vasectomy that cuts to the quick of the American male's dilemma. George Noonan is a nearly middle-aged man in a fog about his role in life. He's a flight attendant for Heartland commuter airlines, serving "all the exciting locations of the Midwest"; his wife has given him five daughters and constantly nags him to get a vasectomy; and he's tortured by visits from his long-deceased dad a man's man and devotee of Duke Wayne and the Detroit Tigers who can't stand the thought of his boy being a "stewardess." George begins confiding his fears and frustrations to a urologist, an ice queen with a warped sense of humor who lends as unsympathetic an ear as she can.
