LUCY HAS SOME 'SPLAINING TO DO AT THE PHOENIX THEATRE

LOVING LUCY, a new play by Philip blue owl Hooser, presents America's favorite redhead as you've never seen her before

The Phoenix Theatre will present playwright Philip blue owl Hooser's LOVING LUCY on its Underground Stage. The production opens with a half-price preview on Thursday, March 18 and closes Sunday, April 11. Performances are at 6:30pm on Thursdays, 8:00pm on Fridays and Saturdays, and 2:00pm on Sundays. Tickets are $22.50 for those 25 and over, $12.00 for those 24 and under. Reduced rates are available for groups of 15 or more. Call the theatre at 317-635-PLAY (317-635-7529) for tickets and information. ABOUT THE PLAY

LOVING LUCY takes place on a single monumental night in Lucille Ball's life: March 2, 1960. On that day, she films the final episode of I Love Lucy, thus ending a ten-year relationship with Lucy Ricardo, her greatest creation. The following day, she will go to court and end her nineteen-year marriage to Desi Arnaz, the man with whom she revolutionized the television situation comedy format and built a Hollywood studio.

Commissioned by the Unicorn Theatre of Kansas City, LOVING LUCY is a tour-de-force (with slapstick!) that is like an evening of classic television: flickering, episodic, and often illuminating. Director Jack Randall Earles, a devout Lucy fan, says, "seventeen years after her death, Lucy is a bigger star than ever. LOVING LUCY," he says, "helps explain that phenomenon." He thinks adult fans of I Love Lucy will love the play: "It's told with familiar humor and personal candor -- it is truly like spending an evening with America's favorite redhead."

The Phoenix Theatre production of LOVING LUCY features Megan McKinney in the role of Lucille Ball. McKinney last appeared at the Phoenix in 2002 in the role of Meredith Parker in the smash hit production of BAT BOY! THE MUSICAL. She also appeared in the 2000 production of OH NO, HERE COMES CHRISTMAS. At the Indiana Repertory Theatre she has appeared in A CHRISTMAS CAROL, THE RED BADGE OF COURAGE, and STATE OF THE UNION.

The Waiting Room by Lisa Loomer at TOTS

Lisa Loomer's often witty, often painful yet objective look at women throughout the centuries who alter themselves physically to please their men. She also takes on the medical establishment and their lack of responsiveness to new "foreign cures" for the sake of big business patents and profits in the U.S.A. The result is a hilarious, touching, enlightening and effective piece of theatre.

The play follows three women from three different centuries who end up together in a doctor's waiting room. Each has distinct medical problems resulting from her social lot in life - Victoria, an uptight woman from the Victorian era who is told by her husband that her ovaries are the cause of her psychological problems and hysteria and, therefore, need to be removed; Forgiveness, a woman from 17th-century China who has had her feet bound since she was a young girl as her culture considers that a symbol of beauty; and Wanda, a contemporary single woman who is continuously improving her looks and body through plastic surgery in hopes of finding that special someone.

Theatre on the Square 627 Massachusetts Ave

"No Taxation With Discrimination" TAX US-MARRY US

The government takes tax money from Lesbians and Gays, yet refuses to grant equal rights guaranteed under the Constitution. When you take tax money from a group of people and then turn around and say they don't have the same legal rights as others, that's discrimination, pure and simple.

Previous generations of civil rights activists have built movements to force reluctant governments to do the right thing. Today we must do the same. Please join us on April 15 for a DontAmend.com protest on April 15, Tax Day. The Indianapolis protest will be at 5:00 pm at the Main Post Office, 125 W South St.

For more information about the Indianapolis protest, please e-mail . For information about national activities, go to the DontAmend.com website.

The Phoenix Theatre has a tradition of presenting the latest hit plays from New York as soon as they are available, with LOVE! VALOR! COMPASSION!, BAT BOY! Darren Lemming is the star center fielder for the champion New York Empires. An extraordinary athlete, he fills both his fans and his teammates with awe at his abilities and his presence on the field and off. When he makes the matter-of-fact announcement at a press conference that he's gay, he throws his team into turmoil and confusion. He also emboldens his closeted accountant, Mason Marzac, to come to terms with his own sexuality-and to fully experience the pure joy of watching great athletes play a sport as well as it can be played. But Darren's announcement brings out the confused and twisted hostilities of the Empires' brilliantly talented but deeply racist and homophobic pitcher, Shane Mungitt-whose rage brings about tragic consequences.

Performance Dates and Times for Take Me Out:

Thursdays at 6:30pm Apr 15 (half-price preview), Apr 22, Apr 29, May 6, May 13, May 20

Nineteen Indianapolis Performing Arts Organizations to Join Forces to Raise Money for HIV/AIDS

Indiana AIDS Fund's Spotlight has raised nearly $600,000 in its' 10-year history

Dancers, musicians, actors and vocalists from 19 of Indianapolis' most prominent performing arts organizations will join forces April 19 again to benefit the Indiana AIDS Fund. They'll perform in Spotlight 2004, an annual show that raises money for education, prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS. The event will be held at 7:30 p.m. at the Indianapolis Civic Theatre.

Spotlight, celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, is the only event in Indianapolis that features performers from so many different organizations. It also has the support of Sir Elton John, whose AIDS foundation will match up to $75,000 of the proceeds raised by the event through the National AIDS Fund.

"In the early 90's, I asked the arts community to come together in support of the friends and colleagues who have been affected by HIV/AIDS," said David Hochoy, artistic director for Dance Kaleidoscope and Spotlight 2004. "I am honored by our premier arts organizations' continued and immediate agreement to perform each year."

Spotlight is the brainchild of Hochoy. While working in New York several years ago, he participated in an annual HIV/AIDS fund-raiser sponsored by numerous dance troupes. In 1993, he and Rob MacPherson, formerly of the Indiana Repertory Theatre, launched Spotlight to raise money for Indiana HIV/AIDS-related causes. Since then, it has been held every year but one.

The event raised $248,000 in 2003 and has raised nearly $600,000 since its inception. The Indiana AIDS Fund uses the money to provide grants to organizations across the state serving and/or advocating on behalf of HIV/AIDS patients. In 2003, 31 agencies received grants.

Since 1982 in Marion County, 1,545 people have been diagnosed with HIV, 3,065 have been diagnosed with AIDS and 1,604 have died of AIDS. Statewide, 4,034 people have been diagnosed with HIV, 7,415 have been diagnosed with AIDS, and 4,084 have died of AIDS since 1982.

Hochoy and Priscilla Lindsay, assistant artistic director at the Indiana Repertory Theatre, will serve as masters of ceremonies. Honorary Co-chairs are first ladies, Maggie Kernan and Amy Peterson. The national celebrity chairs are Randall and Mary Ann Tobias. President Bush named Mr. Tobias Global AIDS Coordinator last July.

The arts groups participating in Spotlight 2004 are:

  • American Cabaret Theatre
  • American Pianists Association
  • Ballet Internationale
  • Brenda Williams
  • Dance Kaleidoscope
  • Gregory Hancock Dance Theatre
  • Hope and Victory HIV Gospel Choir
  • Indiana Repertory Theatre
  • Indianapolis Arts Chorale
  • Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra
  • Indianapolis Civic Theatre
  • Indianapolis Men's Chorus
  • Indianapolis Opera
  • Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra
  • Madame Walker Theatre
  • Meridian Song Project
  • Phoenix Theatre
  • Suzuki & Friends
  • Theatre on the Square

Tickets for the event are $25, $50 and $110 and may be purchased at the Indianapolis Civic Theatre box office at 1200 W. 38th St., or by phone at 317.923.4597. Supporters who purchase a $110 ticket can attend a pre-event reception at the Indianapolis Museum of Art. All proceeds from tickets sales will benefit the Indiana AIDS Fund.

The Indiana AIDS Fund, founded in 1994, is co-convened by The Health Foundation of Greater Indianapolis and the Indiana State Department of Health. Since its inception, it has become the largest private funder of HIV/AIDS programs in the state, having granted more than $2 million to more than 60 organizations. The Indiana AIDS Fund also is a community partner of the National AIDS Fund. Additional information about the Indiana AIDS Fund can be found online at www.indianaaidsfund.org.

The Damien Center and the Fox 59/WB 4 Community Fund to benefit from Dining Out for Life

Dining Out for Life is a signature annual event of The Damien Center. It joins nearly 40 local restaurants and the Indianapolis community for a day to raise money to fight HIV/AIDS and improve educational awareness. This year, The Fox 59/WB 4 Community Fund, a fund of the McCormick Tribune Foundation, joins the Damien Center to help promote and support the event. A complete list of participating restaurants can be found on the Dining Out for Life link on the homepage of www.damien.org. Each Dining Out for Life community participant will receive a complimentary voucher to an Indianapolis Opera performance of their choice.

By simply asking Hoosiers to dine out on Thursday, April 29th, the Damien Center and The Fox 59/WB 4 Community Fund have established a goal to raise $65,000 from restaurants and cafes, patron contributions and event sponsors. Money raised from the event will be used to increase prevention services and education, and lessen the incidence of hunger, unemployment and homelessness for those in our community impacted by HIV/AIDS.

"We look forward to this event each year," said Tracy Elliott, executive director of The Damien Center. "Because it allows us to have extra funding at a time of great need. With more women, men and children affected by HIV/AIDS, we need to continue to find ways to meet the increasing needs of our clients. It offers such a convenient way for people in the community to contribute to a great cause without changing their daily routines."

Since its inception, the event has raised nearly $500,000 to support the vital work of The Damien Center and its mission to provide prevention, care and education for an entire population affected by this disease.

Contributions to Dining Out for Life benefit both The Damien Center and the Fox 59/WB 4 Community Fund, a fund of the McCormick Tribune foundation.
