June 17 - July 25

Phoenix Theatre Presents The Indiana Premiere Of International Hit Musical Naked Boys Singing

The opening number promises no "prudity" and no "crudity"; just plenty of "Gratuitous Nudity."

The Phoenix Theatre continues its tradition of presenting non-traditional musicals with the Indiana premiere of NAKED BOYS SINGING. This good-hearted musical treat will open with a half-price preview on Thursday, June 17 and continue through Sunday, July 25. Tickets are $25.00 for those 25 and over; $15.00 for those 18-24. No one under the age of 18 will be admitted to NAKED BOYS SINGING. Tickets can be purchased with a credit card by calling 317-635-PLAY (317-635-7529).

NAKED BOYS SINGING is a traditional musical revue, in the vein of Vaudeville and high-camp American musical theater, performed by an energetic troupe of young nude men. Its only point is to celebrate the splendors of male nudity in comedy, song and dance. Musical numbers range from the screamingly funny (like the sassy opening number "Gratuitous Nudity" or the circumcision-based "Bliss of a Bris") to poignant and moving numbers (such as "Kris Look What You've Missed" and "Window to Window"). There are 16 songs in NAKED BOYS SINGING- making this 90-minute tribute to the human male, fly by in a torrent of laughter and nudity.

Bloomington Community Pride Picnic

A community Pride picnic will be held in Bloomington on July 4, hosted by the Indiana chapter of National Organization for Women, a coalition member of Indiana Equality. The event, called "Liberty and Justice for All," celebrates the dream of equality and first-class citizenship rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender citizens and their families. Allies are welcome.

The picnic begins in the downtown Third Street Park, immediately after the July 4th Parade, around 4:30 p.m. Free hamburgers and hot dogs (meat and veggie), chips, condiments, salads and non-alcoholic drinks will be provided. Picnickers should bring their own lawn chairs or blankets. Donations will benefit Indiana Equality.

Organizations wishing to set up information tables should obtain approval in advance and bring their own tables and chairs. In case of rain, the picnic will be cancelled.

"Bloomington's Pride picnic joins similar events this summer to be held in Fort Wayne, Evansville and Indianapolis," says South Central Indiana Equality coordinator John Clower. "Events that affirm community for LGBT people and their allies are particularly important now, given ongoing legislative fights on the state and federal levels for nondiscrimination protections and marriage rights."

30th Anniversary National Women's Music Festival (Columbus, OH)

"We're late. We're late. For a very important date." Or to co-opt another cliché, "Yes, Virginia, there is a 30th Anniversary National Women's Music Festival," and it's all happening July 22-25, 2004 on the campus of Ohio State University in Columbus, OH. Brochures are mailing this week. All the info is up on our website: www.wiaonline.org/nwmf. And because we're late, we need your help more than ever to spread the word far and wide.

What a celebration festival this is going to be! Music and comedy to die for (old favorites, new discoveries): Cris, Margie, Tret, Alix, Ember, Pamela, Ubaka, Suzanne, Vickie, Lisa, Zoë and many, many more. Workshops. Drama. Merchants. Open Mic. Drag Kings. Friends. Song & Drum Jams. Women. Step out of your everyday world for 4 days and be your truest self in the company of fabulous women. As always, it will fill you, heart and soul.

You are part of a community of women that has developed, supported, performed at, worked on and attended this wonderful, incredible, empowering, joyful music and cultural phenomenon of a NWMF over the last 30 years. Considering how long we've existed and how many women we've touched, it's utterly AMAZING how many women still don't know about National (or confuse us with that "other" outdoor one).

We're the oldest women's festival. In 30 years, many thousands of women have joined in community with their sisters:

  • to show their commitment to women, our lives and our culture by working year round to produce an extraordinary festival for their sisters and themselves
  • to hear the brightest stars of the women's music circuit and the up and comers
  • to experience arresting and memorable drama performances
  • to learn and improve through professional development and personal growth in every aspect of women's lives and culture
  • to be uplifted by women's spirituality
  • to gather for fun, friendship, empowerment and renewal.
