2003 National Women's Music Festival

The 2003 National Women's Music Festival returns to a 4-day format June 5-8 on the campus of Kent State University in Kent Ohio. Celebrating 29 years of women's music and culture, NWMF was begun in 1974 as a weeklong festival on the campus of the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana, making it the oldest and longest-running U.S. women's festival in the nation.

With intensive workshops and a Mainstage performance on Thursday, June 5, the return of the SheRocks! concert and an all-choral Mainstage on Friday, June 6, and our first-ever drag king show on Saturday, June 7, you're sure to have the best festival experience ever! Plus, we'll have some of the greatest performers, fine arts, crafts, drama presentations, workshops, networking, and just plain fun that our community has to offer. Take a look at this year's line-up of performers:

MAINSTAGE PERFORMANCES

Thursday, June 5
We're planning a special tribute to Kay Gardner and June Jordan before the traditional showing of One Fine Day.

Alix Olson: The new look, the new sound, and the new face of the feminist movement is a fierce and brilliant poet who doesn't mince words and is a force to be reckoned with. She'll positively inspire and ignite you!

Deidre McCalla: With the release of a new CD in the spring, this compelling songwriter will make you remember why her music is known as a celebration of the power and diversity of the human spirit.
Jamie Anderson and the Barely Butch Band: Experience a whole new Jamie as she rocks the house with the Barely Butch Band -- an experience you'll never want to forget!
Tret Fure, one of the most multifaceted artists in the contemporary singer-songwriter arena. An enduring legend in the women's music movement, in her first-ever solo appearance on our Mainstage. Plan to arrive on Thursday so that you don't miss this special addition to the Mainstage lineup.

Friday, June 6
An All-Choral Mainstage* at Pruis Auditorium *Look for a few of the other 2003 NWMF performers to join the choruses in a number or two.

SheWho: This feminist women's vocal ensemble creates musical harmony built from consonance and dissonance, unison and polyphony, sound and silence, the imagination of individuals and the experience of the collective.

The Grand Rapids Women's Chorus: These women sing culturally diverse music that seeks to create and inspire meaningful experiences through musical expression.

The Indianapolis Women's Chorus: Using song and harmony, this chorus blends the uniqueness of each woman's voice to create a plural voice of amazing sound.

Saturday, June 7
Vocolot: This a capella ensemble digs deeply into the art of song in a fusion of folk, jazz, classical, and cantorial vocal traditions, performing original music with universal heart, Jewish soul, and social conscience.

Wishing Chair and Kara Barnard: Last year, you begged for more of this unique mix of bluegrass, folk/rock, ballads, and kick-ass traditional tunes. Hold on to your seats as this trio returns to redefine your idea of women's music!

Zrazy: NWMF welcomes back this Dublin-based pop / jazz duo whose music is an assortment of sounds, from hard-core techno to soft, undulating dance rhythms and from funky disco to unadulterated ballads.

SheRocks! Concert
If you like it energetic, untamed, wild, and intense, this stage is for you! Friday, June 6, at Emens Auditorium

Melissa Ferrick: Her fiery live shows are an infectious experience, exhibiting her magnetic personality and quirky sense of humor!

The Hissyfits: With driving bass and drum beats, soaring harmonies, crunching guitars, and just a touch of the viola, this band's truly unique sound is a study in contrasts -- light and dark, melodic but moody, edgy yet serene.

Ember Swift: Fiercely unpredictable, this utterly uncategorizable blend of jazz-steeped, acoustic punk infused with politics and poetics is back for encore performance and ready to surprise and entice you again!

Kim Archer Band: A Hoosier native and one of the winners in the 2002 open mic competition, Kim redefines raw energy on a stage and takes the audience on a soulful musical journey with her powerful voice and captivating stage presence.

SPOTLIGHT ARTIST'S STAGE
Friday, June 6, Pruis Auditorium
3-5:30 p.m.

Spotlight Artist of the Year Lucie Blue Tremblay: Her music is intensely personal, at times sweet and clear, earthy and unrestrained, or wistful and yearning, but always reaching out to her audience with great warmth and enthusiasm as she shares the passion and wonder and joy that love has brought to her life.

And, introducing: Doria Roberts: A political activist, gay rights activist, and women's rights activist, Doria gives her music a Bohemian blend of pop infused with elements of folk, jazz, and rock. She lays down the truth via her lyrics in a creatively rebellious way, with streetwise sass and unpretentious delivery.

Ellen Keyt: After you see this winner of the 2002 open mic competition, you'll love her perspectives on urban community, family, friendships, culture / subculture / anti-culture, and the experiences of just being human and trying to make sense of it all.

H.I.S. King Show
Saturday, June 7
Presented by Fast Friday Productions
This all-lesbian drag king troupe has been shaking up the Midwestern queer scene for years. Named after the three original kings (Helen, Ivett, and Sue), this troupe of gender-bending folks uphold their promise to deliver "100 percent pure fun!"

COMEDY CONCERT:
Sunday, June 8, 1:30 p.m.

Marga Gomez: This sarcastic Latina legend and chick magnet is a fierce, funny, and foxy comedian who riffs about anything and everything, leaving a trail of laugh-tears in her wake!

Georgia Ragsdale: With a stable of fantasy characters -- the women she might have been had her life taken a slightly different turn -- this sassy, tart-tongued Texan demystifies fashion codes and the ever-changing gay vocabulary.

OTHER PROGRAMMING:
If drumming is what gets you excited, you'll want to join the NWMF DrumChorus. Percussionist teacher Barbara "Wahru" Cleveland and other members of the women's drum community facilitate a 2-day hand-techniques drumming intensive on Friday, June 6, and Saturday, June 7. Learn drum songs and the art of expressing your creativity through drumming and rhythm, and then be a part of the NWMF DrumChorus as it also performs on the Festi-goers in the Limelight Stage, Sunday, June 8.

SPIRITUALITY SERIES GUESTS:
Jade: The humor of this visionary, organizer, catalyst, teacher, leader, and feminist witch, in addition to her dynamic speaking and singing style, captivates and inspires.

Virginia Ramey Mollenkott: A Christian feminist and the author of the landmark book Omnigender: A Trans-religious Approach, she examines the problems inherent in our society's bipolar concept of gender identity, explores alternative concepts of gender within Christianity and other world religions, and offers a fresh way of thinking about gender in our society.

Willow LaMonte: A well-known name in the Wiccan community, she is the editor and publisher of the bi-annual international newspaper Goddessing Regenerated.

We're also planning, in conjunction with the Spirituality Series, a candlelight peace vigil (day, time, and location to be announced).

THE PHOENIX THEATRE PRESENTS WORLD PREMIERE OF INTERNET COMEDY

Michael Whistler's phidias8 explores the anonymous, fantasy-based world of online chatrooms

The Phoenix Theatre, the city's premiere venue for provocative contemporary plays, is presenting the world premiere of phidias8, a new play by Michael Whistler, June 12 through July 13 on the Underground Stage. The production runs in repertory with SPAIN, a new comedy Jim Knable. phidias8 is for mature audiences; tickets are $22.50 for adults 25 and over, $10.00 for those 24 and under. Tickets may be purchased with a credit card by calling the Phoenix Theatre box office at 317-635-7529.

Erik is a database systems analyst who has never made a serious attempt to enter the online world. When America Online invites him to join their service absolutely free, the young gay man jumps in (under the screen name of phidias8) and is soon absorbed in the world of online games, bulletin boards and Martha Stewart. Before long old friends are emailing him and sending him instant messages. Then strangers start chatting with him and he warily enters the artificial world of online chatrooms, where no one is who they are and strangers attempt real-world contact in a simulated setting.

Two virtual personalities capture Erik's phidias8's imagination: ROLAND, an older, well-read gentlemen, who is attracted to phidias8's apparent youth and literate, intelligent chatting style, and VIKING, a strong, forceful character who seduces phidias8 during sensual chats of a more erotic nature. But who are the people behind these screen names? And is phidias8 really Erik, or is he reinventing himself to appeal more to his online admirers?

By the time the play delivers its twist ending, phidias8 and the audience have taken a whirlwind journey across the online landscape: they've experienced the virtual lifestyle perfection of Martha Stewart, a crazy scheme to sell pasta online ("Everyone will have their personalized pasta profile!"), and discovered Chicken Soup for every kind of Soul. phidias8 is a funny, sometimes gripping, and always surprising exploration of the role of fantasy in modern life.

Tickets are $22.50 for those 25 and over, $10.00 for those 24 and under. Call 317-635-PLAY for details.

Schedule phidias8 Wednesdays @ 6:00p June 18

About the Phoenix Theatre

"The great state of Indiana is not exactly overburdened with professional theatres specializing in edgy, progressive fare, but the 19-year-old Phoenix Theatre is one of the major cultural attractions in the city of Indianapolis. Local alternative types, yuppies and hipsters all flock to a trendy little theater with a growing subscriber base and a hard-won national reputation for new works and savvy programming." -- Chris Jones, Chicago Tribune

The Phoenix Theatre has presented productions to challenge and entertain the Indianapolis community for almost twenty years. A professional Equity house, the Theatre presents the Midwest and Indiana premieres of many popular Broadway and off-Broadway plays. The theatre presents a festival of new plays each year with the Frank Basile Festival of Emerging American Theatre, as well as a schedule of adult acting classes. The Phoenix Theatre's regional reputation was enhanced recently by the well-received production of Toni Press-Coffman's Touch at the Victory Gardens Theater in Chicago. THE PHOENIX THEATRE PRESENTS INDIANA PREMIERE OF WHIMSICAL COMIC FANTASY

Jim Knable's Spain tells the story of a jilted woman dealing with her problems in an unexpected way

The Phoenix Theatre, the city's premiere venue for provocative contemporary plays, is presenting the Indiana premiere of Spain, a new play by Jim Knable, June 19 through July 13 on the Mainstage. Barbara is a young escrow agent whose husband has just left her for a "younger woman with a boob job." Having longed to go to Spain for years, she's startled one day to find a Spanish Conquistador, dressed in armour, sitting on her couch, his helmet perched on his lap. After asking him to get his feet off her coffee table, she tries to find out who he is and where he came from. Joining her in the mystery is her best friend and co-worker, Diversion. Diversion doesn't believe Barbara when she tells her about the Conquistador, and believes him to be an hallucination when she actually meets him. Her estranged husband, John, complicates matters by showing up at the wrong time and getting, well, his just desserts.

By the time the police are beating on Barbara's door, she's beginning to wonder what is real and not real. Her Ally McBeal type fantasies takes her to places she's only dreamed of. But are they fantasies? Is she a citizen of her own reality? Or someone else's? Like its companion production, phidias8, playing on the Underground Stage, Spain deals with the pleasures and dangers of fantasy in modern life.

HOOSIER BEARS and MIDWEST BEARPACK WELCOME TRIDENT TO INDIANAPOLIS

Trident International is a levi/leather organization formed in 1973. Its purpose was to promote brotherhood and sisterhood and to give individuals identity and recognition in order to permit involvement in all aspects of the Levi/Leather community. Although each Hall operates totally independent of the others, Trident halls are bound by the ideals of brotherhood and sisterhood and by the Trident Creed. In March 2003, a hall was organized in Indianapolis. The founders of the Indianapolis hall felt Indy was a city of rich diversity and felt there was a need for a national L/L organization.

On Saturday, June 21st, in a grand tradition, the local bear organizations will sponsor a special bar night to demonstrate local unity among its members and the community. Greg's (formerly Our Place), the home bar for all three clubs, will host the event. This spectacular party will kick off with a cookout from 6-9, followed by the bar celebration. Trident Windy City will be presenting the local Trident hall with its colors - a prestigious honor. Check out any of the organizations websites for further details.

The highlight of the performance is the return of a work called "Naked Man".
