Playwright Elaine Romero's ¡CURANDERAS! at the Phoneix
The Phoenix Theatre will present playwright Elaine Romero's ¡CURANDERAS! a provocative play telling the story of a Chicana doctor who travels to Mexico, where she meets a wisecracking folk healer and encounters an ancient Aztec scroll. The play spans from the ancient past to the present, moving through the physical and spiritual world with dreams, visions and nightmares. Ultimately, through her journey, the young doctor discovers her own gifts of healing. ¡CURANDERAS! is being presented as part of the Chicano Now! exhibits at the Indiana State Museum. The production opens with a half-price preview on Thursday, February 19 and closes Sunday, March 14. Performances are at 6:30pm on Thursdays, 8:00pm on Fridays and Saturdays, and 2:00pm on Sundays. Tickets are $22.50 for those 25 and over, $12.00 for those 24 and under. Reduced rates are available for groups of 15 or more. Call the theatre at 317-635-PLAY (317-635-7529) for tickets and information.
¡CURANDERAS! tells the story of two women trying to avoid facing certain truths in their lives. Victoria is a pocha, a Mexican-American who does not speak Spanish. She's just graduated from medical school and she is on holiday in Mexico, away from her political activist fiancé. While on a train she meets Paloma, a Latina curandera, a folk healer. Paloma is taking a break from her husband, whose fidelity she is beginning to question. After running into each other several times, the women become less-than-eager travel partners; Victoria disapproves of Paloma's wisecracking hocus pocus approach to medicine and Paloma senses that Victoria is hiding important secrets. During a visit to a museum, the women come under the power of an ancient Aztec scroll. They both enter into a dreamlike world where Victoria confronts the truth about her fiancé and discovers the hidden healing powers within her, while Paloma sees her marriage in a new light. The women's fateful journey changes them forever.

The Vast Difference by Jeff Daniels at TOTS
Playwright and Screen Actor Jeff Daniels (Apartment 3A, Purple Rose of Cairo, Dumb and Dumber, The Hours) penned this outrageous and funny saga of a man who has sired three daughters (he kept trying for a son) and has decided to call it quits. He wrestles with his decision and ultimately goes through with having a vasectomy with unbelievably funny results which include being pursued by his Doctor toting a chain saw!
Actor Jeff Daniels' third play for his hometown-based theater company: The Purple Rose is a comedy about vasectomy that cuts to the quick of the American male's dilemma. George Noonan is a nearly middle-aged man in a fog about his role in life. He's a flight attendant for Heartland commuter airlines, serving "all the exciting locations of the Midwest"; his wife has given him five daughters and constantly nags him to get a vasectomy; and he's tortured by visits from his long-deceased dad a man's man and devotee of Duke Wayne and the Detroit Tigers who can't stand the thought of his boy being a "stewardess." George begins confiding his fears and frustrations to a urologist, an ice queen with a warped sense of humor who lends as unsympathetic an ear as she can.

"Broadway Revue" to Support The Damien Center
During their national tour stop in Indianapolis in March, cast members from Disney's THE LION KING will perform a benefit concert for The Damien Center on Monday, March 8, 2004. The event, which will be held at the American Cabaret Theatre, begins at 7:30 p.m. and will feature members of the cast, performing songs from popular Broadway shows.
In conjunction with The Damien Center, the event is being organized by cast member Ben Lipitz. Lipitz, who performs the role of "Pumbaa" in the touring company, says, "The cast and I are strongly committed to fighting HIV/AIDS in whatever way we can."
Lipitz, who volunteered to coordinate the project for the cast adds, "working with The Damien Center to lessen the incidence of HIV transmission and alleviate the hunger, unemployment and homelessness brought on by this disease is well worth our time. This concert is our way of helping the fight."
Since the beginning of the AIDS epidemic, the performing arts industry has assumed an exceptional leadership role in heightening awareness and raising critical funds to support research, prevention and care for those impacted by the disease. In doing so, performers like Lipitz feel a sense of responsibility to mobilize the unique abilities within the entertainment industry to mitigate the suffering of individuals affected by HIV/AIDS.
Tracy Elliott, Executive Director of The Damien Center, is elated about the collaboration. "Because of the increase in HIV transmission here in Central Indiana, we are forced to expand out reach and embrace more--not fewer--people in crisis. Partnering with Ben (Lipitz) and the cast of THE LION KING to raise funds in support of our mission is truly an exciting opportunity for the Center."
The concert, which is being sponsored by Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, The Word, American Cabaret Theatre and Silver Square, Inc. will raise money to directly support the client services of The Damien Center.
Tickets are available at $15, $20 and $35 by calling The Damien Center at (317) 632-0123 or by e-mailing .

LUCY HAS SOME 'SPLAINING TO DO AT THE PHOENIX THEATRE
LOVING LUCY, a new play by Philip blue owl Hooser, presents America's favorite redhead as you've never seen her before
The Phoenix Theatre will present playwright Philip blue owl Hooser's LOVING LUCY on its Underground Stage. The production opens with a half-price preview on Thursday, March 18 and closes Sunday, April 11. Performances are at 6:30pm on Thursdays, 8:00pm on Fridays and Saturdays, and 2:00pm on Sundays. Call the theatre at 317-635-PLAY (317-635-7529) for tickets and information. ABOUT THE PLAY
LOVING LUCY takes place on a single monumental night in Lucille Ball's life: March 2, 1960. On that day, she films the final episode of I Love Lucy, thus ending a ten-year relationship with Lucy Ricardo, her greatest creation. The following day, she will go to court and end her nineteen-year marriage to Desi Arnaz, the man with whom she revolutionized the television situation comedy format and built a Hollywood studio.
Commissioned by the Unicorn Theatre of Kansas City, LOVING LUCY is a tour-de-force (with slapstick!) that is like an evening of classic television: flickering, episodic, and often illuminating. Director Jack Randall Earles, a devout Lucy fan, says, "seventeen years after her death, Lucy is a bigger star than ever. LOVING LUCY," he says, "helps explain that phenomenon." He thinks adult fans of I Love Lucy will love the play: "It's told with familiar humor and personal candor -- it is truly like spending an evening with America's favorite redhead."
The Phoenix Theatre production of LOVING LUCY features Megan McKinney in the role of Lucille Ball. McKinney last appeared at the Phoenix in 2002 in the role of Meredith Parker in the smash hit production of BAT BOY! THE MUSICAL. She also appeared in the 2000 production of OH NO, HERE COMES CHRISTMAS. At the Indiana Repertory Theatre she has appeared in A CHRISTMAS CAROL, THE RED BADGE OF COURAGE, and STATE OF THE UNION.

The Rock Hard Show at Talbott Street
Hosted by Vicki St. James
Featuring:
The Slurs, The Relatives, and The Jabs
Followed by a Drag Show
And Progressive House spun by DJ Logan
While the Indiana Legislature (not to mention the Federal Government) struggles over whether to ban Gay Marriage, allow Gay Marriage, or just pretend Gay people don't exist, three Indianapolis Bands and one Gay nightclub have decided to form a union even more rare. In this largely traditional Midwestern city, the truth of the matter is that people with differing sexual orientations don't usually go to the same events or clubs. But on Friday, March 19th Indianapolis will see a cross-pollination of counter-cultures. Because on that night The Slurs, The Jabs, and The Relatives will play a beautiful nightclub called Talbott Street.
Brent Eskew of The Relatives (winners of the first Patio/Benchmark Records' Battle of the Bands) spearheaded the effort under his production moniker of "Inventions That Rock Promotions." He was motivated by a desire to play to a different crowd than usual, and "To shake up this town a little!"
Justin Allen of The Slurs sees it as a natural fit. "It doesn't matter if you are straight or gay. If you walk into a place like Talbott Street on a Friday or Saturday night you can't help but feel the sex in the air. Rock and Roll is all about sex. So we wanna play where the sexy people go."
Doug Perdue of The Jabs, points out that many gays already go to places like The Melody Inn or The Patio to see rock and roll acts. "Now they get to see us on their turf."
No one involved sees a "turf war" coming about, but some wonder how the club's usual patrons will react to this event. "I just hope they like us," says Perdue. "And I really think they will. I've heard The Slurs are working on special music for the night, and we (The Jabs) will have a few surprises too. Brent has tried to make more than a rock show with this event. And I'm hoping a lot of straights got the guts to come hang too."
Indeed. Eskew has even made sure the bands will look their best. Custom clothing is being talked about and all the bands' hairdos will be coiffed by none other than famed hairdresser Emmett Cooper and his staff. The bands will also dine on food provided by Hoaglin Fine Catering. Brent says, "It's gonna be a class act all the way."
The Rock Hard Show will be 5$ at the door DOS. Go to http://www.talbottstreet.com/ for directions to the club, pictures, and more!
