On Friday, October 1st, the REEL GENDER film series will continue with "Soldier's Girl", the true heart-wrenching story of the murder of Private Barry Winchell at the hands of his fellow soldiers at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. The homophobic and transphobic atmosphere that pervaded the military base created a dangerous environment for Barry when his relationship with Calpernia Addams, a beautiful transgendered nightclub performer, was discovered.

Outstanding performances by Lee Pace as Calpernia and Troy Garity as Barry will draw you into this emotional and powerful film.

Buskirk-Chumley Theater and WTTS present Indigo Girls

7:30 pm,
$35 General Admission
TICKETS ON SALE THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 9
www.buskirkchumley.org

"After over two decades and eight studio albums together, Amy Ray and Emily Saliers, known to their legion of fans as Indigo Girls, have played thousands of shows. They've operated within the music industry, without ever being a product of that industry, gaining the respect of their peers, not to mention an extremely loyal fanbase. It's an audience that most artists would envy: one that eagerly awaits new music from the duo, and greets older songs like old friends.

Fans often go to multiple shows per tour, and never leave the gig until the final note rings out, and the house lights go on. Regardless of which way the pop culture breezes are blowing, who is topping the pop charts, who is dominating fashion magazine covers, or who is getting played on the radio, Indigo Girls' concert experience remains a constant.

Catch a show in any given city in America and you will understand the meaning of an enduring artist-audience bond. and it has been developed without marketing gurus, corporate tie-ins or spin doctors. Indigo Girls have thrived through flirtations with the mainstream as well as when the media spotlight was pointed elsewhere. But one recent show - on August 14, 2003 at the Central Park Summerstage in New York City - truly revealed volumes about the duo and their relationship with their fans.

Phoenix Theatre Produces Stage Adaptation Of Popular Book "Crowns: Portraits Of Black Women In Church Hats"

Phoenix production of Gospel musical features choreography by Iris Rosa

The Phoenix's Theatre's 04-05 season continues October 21-November 21 with Regina Taylor's Crowns, a script based on the book "Crowns: Portraits of Black Women in Church Hats" by Photographer Michael Cunningham and Craig Marberry. Bryan Fonseca and Shari Lynn Himes will co-direct Crowns.

Sensing three-dimensional dramatic possibilities in the material, Marberry approached writer and director Emily Mann, artistic head of New Jersey's McCarter Theatre (whose notable works include several documentary-style plays based on real-life events), about transforming the material for the stage.

Mann commissioned a stage adaptation from actor and writer Regina Taylor, who spent two years devising the theatrical language for the play, including a three-week residency at the Sundance Theatre Lab. In addition to introducing music and movement, Taylor distilled the many women represented in the book to six female characters (and one man, who plays multiple roles) and created a new character - a young woman from Brooklyn who is sent to live with her grandmother in South Carolina after her brother is shot. Directed by Taylor and co-produced by McCarter Theatre and New York's Second Stage Theatre, Crowns received its world premiere at McCarter in October 2002. Of the play, Taylor said "I envisioned a Gospel music-driven piece, a crazy quilt of music and movement and storytelling that takes us through the rituals of a Sunday in the South with characters breaking out of the framework to deliver 'arias,' direct addresses to the audience that may start in the Sunday church service but jump off into memories of life experiences in different times and different places."

PERFORMANCE SCHEDULE, SINGLE TICKETS, AND SUBSCIPTIONS

Crowns will be performed on the Phoenix Mainstage: Thursdays at 6:30pm: October 21 (Half-Price Preview), October 28, November 4, November 11, November 18
Fridays at 8:00pm: October 22 (Opening Night), October 29, November 5, November 12, November 19
Saturdays at 8:00pm: October 23, October 30, November 6, November 13, November 20
Sundays at 2:00pm: October 24, October 31, November 7, November 14, November 21

Seating is general admission; doors open one-half hour before curtain for seating. Performances may be added to accommodate audience demand.

Single tickets are $25.00 for those 25 and over, $15.00 for those 24 and under. Half-Price Preview: All tickets $12.50 (no double discount for young adults). Group rates for adults are available for groups of 15 or more, as are discounts for buying out the house. A $115 flexible subscription package called the FlexPass provides 6 ticket vouchers for the price of 5 single tickets; vouchers may be redeemed for tickets for any of the Phoenix Theatre's productions.

Damien Center's Grande Masquerade

The Damien Center will host Grande Masquerade, its premier fundraising event to raise awareness and money to fight HIV/AIDS.

This year, Grande Masquerade will host two events: a black tie dinner gala on Saturday, October 23 at The Indiana Roof Ballroom and then, as a nostalgic nod to the event's original tradition conceived in 1987, a costume and dance party on Friday, October 22 at Talbott Street.

Since its inception, the event has raised nearly $1,000,000 to support the vital work of The Damien Center and its mission to prevent the spread of HIV and lessen the incidence of hunger, unemployment and homelessness for those in our community impacted by this disease.

Tracy Elliott, Executive Director of The Damien Center, is elated about the two events. "Because of the increase in HIV transmission here in Central Indiana, we are forced to expand our reach and embrace more--not fewer--people in crisis. Honoring a seventeen-year tradition by Grande Masquerade hosting two events to raise funds in support of our mission is truly an exciting opportunity for the Center. Now there are ways for a larger part of the community to support our important work"

On October 22, beginning at 9:00 p.m., Talbott Street opens its doors as host to Grande Masquerade's costume and dance party, "Apparition." The evening will entail costumes, dancing and special appearances by artists from the Indianapolis Opera. Tickets for the event are $10 and can be purchased at Talbott Street of by calling The Damien Center.

For it's part, the Saturday black tie dinner gala at the India Roof Ballroom will again be an event of new creative heights. This year, Grande Masquerade welcomes Dance Kaleidoscope, the Indianapolis Opera and the Indianapolis Men's Chorus to its entertainment stage, making an artistic statement to this year's pan-Asian theme, "Apparition."

Additionally, The Damien Center will be presenting its Positive Voices Award to Grande Masquerade Honorary Chairman, Matthew Cusick. Having perused a lifelong career of gymnastics and dance, Matthew had earned a place, performing with Cirque de Soleil. After disclosing his HIV-positive status during a routine physical examination with the dance company's doctor, he was fired two days later. Having won a landmark legal battle and forcing Cirque to adopt a new non-discrimination policy worldwide, Mathew has become a national spokesman, urging others to stand strong in the face of HIV/AIDS and discrimination.

The dinner gala begins at 6:30 p.m. with a cocktail reception, followed by dinner, silent auction, the headline entertainment and dancing. Tickets for the event begin at $125.

For more information about Grande Masquerade and its events on Friday and Saturday, visit www.damien.org , email [email protected] or call 317.632-0123.
