Phoenix Theatre Produces Stage Adaptation Of Popular Book "Crowns: Portraits Of Black Women In Church Hats"

Phoenix production of Gospel musical features choreography by Iris Rosa

The Phoenix's Theatre's 04-05 season continues October 21-November 21 with Regina Taylor's Crowns, a script based on the book "Crowns: Portraits of Black Women in Church Hats" by Photographer Michael Cunningham and Craig Marberry. Bryan Fonseca and Shari Lynn Himes will co-direct Crowns.

Sensing three-dimensional dramatic possibilities in the material, Marberry approached writer and director Emily Mann, artistic head of New Jersey's McCarter Theatre (whose notable works include several documentary-style plays based on real-life events), about transforming the material for the stage.

Mann commissioned a stage adaptation from actor and writer Regina Taylor, who spent two years devising the theatrical language for the play, including a three-week residency at the Sundance Theatre Lab. In addition to introducing music and movement, Taylor distilled the many women represented in the book to six female characters (and one man, who plays multiple roles) and created a new character - a young woman from Brooklyn who is sent to live with her grandmother in South Carolina after her brother is shot. Directed by Taylor and co-produced by McCarter Theatre and New York's Second Stage Theatre, Crowns received its world premiere at McCarter in October 2002. Of the play, Taylor said "I envisioned a Gospel music-driven piece, a crazy quilt of music and movement and storytelling that takes us through the rituals of a Sunday in the South with characters breaking out of the framework to deliver 'arias,' direct addresses to the audience that may start in the Sunday church service but jump off into memories of life experiences in different times and different places."

PERFORMANCE SCHEDULE, SINGLE TICKETS, AND SUBSCIPTIONS

Crowns will be performed on the Phoenix Mainstage: Thursdays at 6:30pm: October 21 (Half-Price Preview), October 28, November 4, November 11, November 18

HRC Fundraising Event - A Night At The Phoenix Theatre

Crowns at the Phoenix Theatre

$25 per person (includes performance and pre-performance reception)

6:30 pm | Hors d'oeuvres and Cash Bar 7:30 pm | Showtime!

Tickets available from Out Word Bound or from Gary Brackett at 435-4923 or .

Crowns is a joyful, gospel musical about hats. Big, wide-brimmed hats. Pillbox hats. Fussy hats. Hats with fox fur and satin trim and emerald-green feathers; hats covered in fruit, birds and ringing bells. Hats that flirt, scold, praise and grieve. Hats that bring power. Hats that sing.

These are the hats worn by the "hat queens" of the South-women whose storied lives are woven into the straw, silk, wool and lace that adorn their heads. With soulful, spiritual and joyful music, they celebrate family and faith, love and loss, seeking (and finding) one's true identity. All you have to do is listen. Based on the acclaimed book: "Crowns: Portraits of Black Women in Church Hats" by Michael Cunningham and Craig Marberry.

IndyIndie Presents Wishing Chair

Saturday, November 13th at 6pm indyindie presents the return of Wishing Chair this time with very special guest, Nancy Scott. This performance falls just days after Wishing Chair returns from Texas mixing their brand new CD. They will be performing loads of new music from their new CD along with favorites. Top that off with a warm up performance by Nancy Scott...and maybe a little collaboration...The evening will be stellar!

And here's the best part...but you have to keep it a secret...well...sorta... Kiya and Miriam (Wishing Chair) are pretty special in our book and to most everyone who comes in contact with them. They are quick to give of themselves without thought of the cost. They are mentors to so many other young musicians. They are advocates of women's culture helping to establish venues like indyindie and other groups from coast to coast. We want to let them know how special they are to us in indy. For this performance we're moving from our cozy little clubhouse to Jesus MCC which will hold 350! How great would it be to pack out the house for them!!! Since the venue is so much larger, we're offering a limited number of preferred seat tickets in the first few rows for those who don't want to miss a note! The room has no bad seats and the sound is great! We can't wait.

In addition to the larger venue, we're also adding a silent auction. We've collected several desirables...including a photo album filled with autographed pics of all the women who have performed at indyindie from the beginning, art from several of our display artists, fever memorabilia, and more. PLUS...Wishing Chair will be offering 'pre' sale of their new CD! You'll be on the list to receive the CD before anyone else!

Instead of full dinner, we'll be offering light appetizers and drinks (non alcoholic). There will still be a good selection for any diet just on a lighter scale. We're trimming all the extras to make this a surprise $$ present for these two great performers!

What can you do to help???

  • If you have something you would like to donate to the auction, let us know. We'll take anything! Take advantage and get that stuff out of your attic! Nothing is too crazy!
  • Tell your friends and their friends and their friends...the more the merrier....but don't tell Kiya and Miriam...we want them to be surprised!!
  • Be there!!

Tickets are available online www.indyindie.com and at OUT WORD BOUND BOOKSTORE 625 N. East Street 317-925-9100.

IYG's 1st Annual "Phantom Run"

IYG's Phantom Run is believed to be the first event of its kind in Indianapolis: a "run" to raise money for the organization, without a physical race actually taking place. Funds raised will help continue the important work IYG does for the gay youth of central Indiana. "This event is a great morale and community builder," s

ays Lydi Davidson, IYG Executive Director. "Not only does this allow the people of Indianapolis to participate in a great 'road race' at their own speed and skill level, it also allows each individual to determine what place they will finish, but the funds it raises will allow us to actively continue our programs."

For a registration fee of $25, "Phantom runners" will receive a t-shirt. For an additional fee, "runners" can select the place they would like to finish: $20 for "New World Record;" $15 for a first-place; $10 for a second-place; or $5 for a third-place finish.

"Official" race results will be sent to each "runner." Participants are encouraged to show off Phantom race results to their friends, family members, co-workers, and other "runners". IYG hopes to begin an annual tradition of this no-race race.

Registration forms are available on line at www.indianayouthgroup.org, or by calling 317-541-8726. Forms and fees are due by October 26, 2004. T-shirts (available in sizes small to 4 XL) and race results will be available two weeks later. For more information, contact IYG.

IYG is a non-profit organization serving the needs of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth in Indiana. It is one of Central Indiana's leading providers of services to LGBT youth ages 12 to 20.

The IYG mission is to provide a safe place, confidential environment, youth development programs and support services which foster personal strength and wellness among self-identified lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender young people.

IYG advocates on their behalf in schools, on the streets, and in the community.

Publicly and privately funded, Indiana Youth Group serves over 180 youths each month. For more information, go to www.indianayouthgroup.org.
